What is Propionic Acid ?

Propionic acid, also known as methylacetic, it is a short-chain saturated fatty acid.

The chemical formula of propionic acid is CH3CH2COOH, the CAS number is 79-09-4, and the molecular weight is 74.078

Propionic acid is a colorless, corrosive oily liquid with pungent odor. Propionic acid is miscible with water, soluble in ethanol, ether and chloroform.

Main uses of propionic acid: food preservatives and mildew inhibitors. It can also be used as an inhibitor of medium-viscous substances such as beer. Used as nitrocellulose solvent and plasticizer. It is also used in the preparation of nickel plating solutions, the preparation of food flavors, and the manufacture of medicines, pesticides, and antifungal agents.

1. Food preservatives

The anti-fungal and mold effect of propionic acid is better than that of benzoic acid when the pH value is below 6.0, and the price is lower than that of sorbic acid. It is one of the ideal food preservatives.

2. Herbicides

In the pesticide industry, propionic acid can be used to produce propionamide, which in turn produces some herbicide varieties.

3. Spices

In the fragrance industry, propionic acid can be used to prepare fragrances such as isoamyl propionate, linalyl, geranyl propionate, ethyl propionate, benzyl propionate, etc., which can be used in food, cosmetics, soap fragrances.

4. Drugs

In the pharmaceutical industry, the main derivatives of propionic acid include vitamin B6, naproxen, and Tolperisone. Propionic acid has a weak inhibitory effect on fungal growth in vitro and in vivo.It can be used for the treatment of dermatophytes.

Handling and storage of propionic acid

Operation precautions: closed operation, strengthen ventilation. Operators must undergo special training and strictly abide by operating procedures. Equipped with safety equipment.

Storage Precautions: Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Warehouse temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. Keep container tightly closed. It should be stored separately from oxidizing agents, reducing agents and alkalis.
